Bocar Ly, senior adviser to the President of the Republic, visited the Conakry Urban Park site on Wednesday to see the progress of the work. This park, covering an area of 13 hectares, is entirely financed by Rio Tinto and aims to improve the living environment of the inhabitants of the city.

The architectural plans have been finalized and validated in collaboration with the Guinean government, thus marking a crucial step in the realization of the project. The construction works are in progress, with the start of the earthworks on May 9th. A security fence had already been erected around the perimeter of the park, the first stone of which had been laid the previous December by Prime Minister Bernard Goumou.

The park will include a variety of sports facilities, with 20 facilities in total. Among them, there are 6 mini synthetic football pitches, a large grass football pitch with international dimensions, 2 tennis courts, 2 basketball courts, 4 volleyball courts, 2 beach volleyball courts, 1 handball court, a athletics track and a skate park. All these fields will be approved to the standards of the sports federations.

In addition to sports facilities, the park will offer leisure facilities, including a hall housing a restaurant and activity areas. Children’s playgrounds will also be available, as well as fitness terminals for outdoor sports activities. Cycling enthusiasts and pedestrians can enjoy a dedicated track.

The architectural plan also includes landscaping, with a palm grove and thematic gardens showcasing the vegetation of Guinea’s four natural regions. Educational trails will be set up for young visitors. A vegetated walkway will lead to a watchtower offering a magnificent view of the entire park. In addition, a sandy beach and a seawater basin equipped with a jetty will allow the practice of nautical activities.

The park will also have a car park with a capacity of 150 spaces, thus facilitating access for visitors.

The Conakry Urban Park project bears witness to a commitment to local economic development. All the subcontractors involved in the construction are Guinean companies, thus promoting the growth of the national private sector. At the end of April 2023, 110 Guinean employees were already hired on the site, and the construction phase is expected to create up to 500 jobs.
