Liverpool deflates in the Premier League

Everything seems to indicate that Jurgen Klopp will not have a grand goodbye with Liverpool.

Yesterday’s 2-0 defeat away to rival Everton dealt a serious blow to the Reds’ hopes of becoming Premier League champions.

Goals from Jarrad Branthwaite and Dominic Calvert-Lewin left Klopp with a bitter taste in his final Merseyside derby before his exit at the end of the season.

“I can only apologize to the people today. We should have done better. We have not done it and that is why we lost,” Klopp acknowledged.

Liverpool is in second place in the English league, three points behind leader Arsenal. They are one point ahead of reigning champions Manchester City, who are third, but have two games less than their rivals.

Klopp had recently indicated that his team needs to be perfect to win his second Premier title with the club. But the team is in the doldrums, with two defeats in its last three games in the league. While Liverpool is deflating in the Premier, Everton seems to leave behind the risk of relegation. Sean Dyche’s team was eight points above the fatal zone.

The location near the basement didn’t bother the home fans much, who were busy celebrating the damage they caused to Liverpool.

“They lost the league at Goodison Park,” they chanted shortly before the final whistle. The majority of the 39 thousand spectators remained inside the venue to enjoy the atmosphere and celebrate with their fans on the field.

Klopp had dominated this rivalry since 2015, when he arrived at Anfield. He had won nine of the last 16 derbies, before yesterday.

another scare

Manchester United survived another scare. They came back twice to beat Sheffield, which occupies the penultimate place, 4-2.

Sheffield took the lead 1-0 and then 2-1, thanks to goals from Jayden Bogle and the Chilean Ben Brereton in each half of the duel at Old Trafford.

But Harry Maguire and Bruno Fernandes, from the penalty spot, equalized on each occasion.

Fernandes gave United the lead in the 81st minute. Rasmus Hojlund secured the three points four minutes later.

United climbed to sixth place in the table, 13 behind Aston Villa, which is fourth.

Meanwhile, Crystal Palace secured permanence, thanks to a double from Jean-Philippe Mateta in a 2-0 victory over Newcastle.

Palace has 39 points, 14 more than Luton, located in 18th place and which can add at most 37 if it wins its last four games of the campaign.
