Live Fire Training Exercise at Tampa International Airport: Impressive Display of Firefighting Skills

2024-01-17 16:58:12

An impressive display of firefighting skills and prowess will be on display at Tampa International Airport this Wednesday starting at 5 pm, when the Tampa Fire and Rescue Department conducts a live training exercise.

This event, which promises flames up to 40 feet high, is organized by the Tampa Fire Rescue Airport Fire Rescue Division.

The uniqueness of this exercise lies in its focus: fighting fires caused by jet fuel, a rare but critical challenge for firefighters. The practice is carried out under the darkness of the night to minimize the visibility of the dense columns of black smoke, although the nocturnal flames promise to be a visually striking spectacle, visible from several kilometers away, many times people call the authorities to report “fireballs”.

The fire department has issued a notice to the community, urging not to be alarmed by the presence of smoke in the airport area during Wednesday night. The fire is expected to intensify around 6:30 p.m. The training uses a metal frame with wings, submerged in jet fuel, to simulate a realistic air emergency.

This exercise is part of a rigorous 40-hour certification class, which culminates with this live fire scenario. The firefighters who participate and overcome this challenge will become alternative personnel for the Tampa International Airport station, and must recertify annually in this type of exercises.

In a gesture of interagency cooperation, Tampa International Airport has extended this training opportunity to other airports. Members of the St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport will also be on hand to complete their annual recertification.

The Tampa Fire Department, which assigns 45 personnel to the ARFF (Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting) station, including the airport division chief, a trainer/educator and an administrative assistant, demonstrates air preparation and safety with this exercise, crucial aspects for the well-being of the Tampa community and its visitors.
