About ten civil society organisations, including Kif Kif and çavaria, have responded satisfactorily to the verdict in the Schild & Friends case. “This is a historic victory with major consequences for Vlaams Belang and the upcoming elections,” says Nina Henkens, coordinator of the anti-racist platform Kif Kif vzw.
“The ruling is historic and a victory for our democracy and the rule of law,” says Henkens. “It shows that there is no free pass for orchestrated hatred and the targeting of minority groups, not even online and in closed chat groups. The victory comes through the hard work of civil society organizations and the courage and perseverance of the civil parties.”
Eef Heylighen from LGBTI+ organization çavaria joins Kif Kif. “The racist and sexist actions that led to today’s trial are part of a larger problem: a growing movement of violence, hatred and discrimination. This counter-movement also targets LGBTI+ people. Today’s ruling is an important precedent and gives us the tools to continue to defend, expand and not allow our rights to be destroyed in the future.”
Two convicts are members and employees of Vlaams Belang. Henkens emphasizes the consequences that the conviction has for the political party. “Vlaams Belang is rising in the polls and is increasingly calling out that they should join the government following the elections, but this conviction is a reminder to all parties that the Belang has no place in any democratic government.”
In addition to Kif Kif and çavaria, the press release was also signed by Wel Jong, Another Jewish Voice, Hand in Hand once morest racism, Hart Boven Hard, Ella vzw, Rebelle vzw, the May 8 coalition, Foyer vzw, BOEH! and The Great Resistance.
