“Whites before blacks” is the first novel of the novelist Danutė Kalinauskaitė, who won the National Culture and Art Prize for “the richness of small forms”. She publishes books infrequently, every seven years (and published the second one after a very long break), because she says she cannot give in to the general pressure to write faster, more. Follows a natural rhythm: you need as much time to write a book as you need, not as much time as someone else gives it to you. Perhaps that is why each of those books becomes a literary event.

According to Commissioner A. Ožala, D. Kalinauskaitė’s book is “refined, multi-layered, with an abundance of authentic details, it seems that every sentence is refined, personal history is intertwined with the big one, a real pleasure of slow reading. Although it is a novel, at least in some places it looked like a piece of work combined from separate short stories. However, this certainly does not spoil the goodness of the book, one of the most important books of the year.”

The event should take place in October, the laureate will be awarded a diploma and a cash prize of 10,000 euros. The organizer of the festival is the Union of Lithuanian Writers.
