Litto Nebbia returns to the Alto Valley: how he recovered from his accident, his history with rock musicians and why he’s still on the road

Lito Nebbia is 76 years old. Less than a year and a half ago, he tripped and fell, fracturing his right humerus and patella in his right knee. They performed several surgeries on him. His recovery was much quicker than expected – both by his doctors and by himself. He was getting ready to drive a few miles south to do what he’d always done: play.

What motivates a man who locked himself in the bathroom of La Perla del Once in the early morning of May 2, 1967, and started the Argentinian rock explosion with Tanguito to continue doing what he has always done? ) home so far? The 76-year-old would say on the other end of the phone, in the comfort of his home in Buenos Aires, that emotion had resisted him in the distant past, but only a little.

Emotions and work, of course. Because playing was and still is his only job. Apparently even a double fracture in his seventies couldn’t stop him from doing his job. In fact, in a few days he will perform in Roca and Centenario (see separate content) with the powerful Trio del Sur, a band he formed about ten years ago with bassist Gustavo Giannini and drummer Julián Cabaza, both Rock musicians he met through e-mail.

Nebia, autumn and beyond

“First of all, I don’t know if you know, but a year and two months ago, I was in an accident.” From here, Lito’s accident interrupted a series of performances he was doing because he fell and broke his He suffered a broken right humerus and kneecap, forcing him to postpone his performance. Of course, we know this.

“I haven’t played in about a year, I can’t go out. What happened to me is, I was just going out to play and I slipped. I slipped and when I fell, I broke the humerus in my arm and the kneecap in my leg. Got it. I had to have surgery for both of those things. The thing is I had the surgery and everything went well and rehab started and it was kinesiology and it never happened to me. But I’m not complaining, I’m fine, I don’t have any pain, both surgeries went well and healed, but now the education with the bones is missing again, so, for example, my legs still don’t work. Very good to bend, but I can go slowly,” he explains with the same enthusiasm as he would tell about how he met Gustavo Giannini.

“I started playing little by little a month ago, I’ve done four shows and it’s going well, I don’t have any pain, I sing, I play quietly for two hours, everything is fine,” said the collaborator With Tanguito, “The Raft” was created, which was the fuel for the big bang. “The good thing about it for me personally is, by hanging out, it allows me to play with the Power Trio del Sur again,” and from one thing to the next, we haven’t been with them for almost five years. Played, because we stopped playing after a while,” he pointed out. One of the reasons they stopped playing was that Nebbia had a broken bone, and the other thing was…another fracture, Giannini’s leg was broken.

“No, no, I didn’t expect that,” Lito Nebbia was quick to reply when asked if he thought the injury or its consequences might prevent him from continuing to play. “In fact, I tell you, based on what they told me, on the contrary, I recovered very quickly. Besides, I feel physically good, thank God, my voice is good, my oxygen is good, I’m fine. I Basically being fine mentally and mentally, it had a big impact on how to move forward. No, no, I slipped, it was a fate thing, it was something, I don’t know, as they say. , maybe the body says “stop, do this, take better care of yourself”, I don’t know. The truth is, I’m a very fast paced person, I work a lot because I do things I love, and I never do. Never stopped, not even for a day.

on stage, Nebbia, Giannini and Kabazza.

Regarding the Southern Power Trio’s performances at Roca and Centenario, Nebbia said: “Since we haven’t performed for a long time and the material we played has been recorded, since we also recorded two albums with this lineup, our repertoire It’s very rich, full of harmonies and rhythmic changes, so it’s refreshing for us, and the way we sing it is different from how it was recorded, and we have to play it non-stop for weeks (laughs).”

The two albums Nebbia refers to are the self-titled Poderoso Trio del Sur, recorded live at UNC’s Aula Magna in 2014; and Song of the Moon (2016). Both albums combine Litto’s work from different periods, some covers, and the trio’s original compositions.

According to Gustavo Giannini, the first album came from a tour of the South. After the show in Trelew, Litto Nebbia felt that the trio had found their identity and were ready to record an album. “Then we organized a tour of the Río Negro, starting in Las Grutas and continuing in Room II at Casa de la Cultura, where the photos in the album are from that show; the meeting ended in Norte in Neuquén Carolina University Magna (Aula Magna) The whole sound belongs to the Aula Magna performance. The idea was to include recordings from these three performances, but in our opinion the one in Neuquén best captures the trio’s sound. One. None of them remember that the album is ten years old. At least not Giannini, nor Nebbia.

Canto a la Luna, the trio’s second work, is a studio album recorded in Melopea by Mario Sobrino. It includes several songs Litto wrote for the album, as well as some very old Litto songs from the late ’60s and mid-’70s.

The story of the southern trio

“A very good musician and a very nice person,” Nebbia said of Giannini. “A very nice guy, a very good musician. Yeah, I also got to know him because he wrote to me. A lot of people wrote to me asking me to tell them what I thought of the song, the mix of the album. Sound way and so on. In my time, I sent Bolillo to everyone, including, of course, many people I didn’t even know. He was one of those people who wrote to me and I’m talking to you. , I know what, maybe 20 years ago, told me that he wanted to learn bass, but it was very difficult because where he lived, at Roca, they didn’t even sell bass books. Then I remember telling him where he could. Found a guy who I thought was cool to start learning bass, and he sent me some recorded stuff like this, very homemade, of how he played a song.

At the same time, Giannini started selling music from the Melopea label in Alto Valles, but you still hadn’t met Litto Nebbia, at least not in person. All emails. Time passed again, but not much, until the bassist proposed to him, to Litto Nebbia, the man who made everything possible, who knew if he didn’t want to come and play in this area Several places where some appointments can be arranged. He agreed and came. He came on.

It was clear at this point that on one of the dates on the first tour he would be asked to play a song with a drummer friend. “We played,” Nebia recalled. “They were some really fun jams. The thing is, the next time I went to play in the area, I was the one who suggested they not play, they just invited some songs, but every time we play in the area we organize a Trio. Even if I formed another band, like I have a quartet now, I would always play with him and the drummer that he introduced me to, and he introduced me to Julian as a friend, well, as the situation goes. development, we recorded the first album, and then the next year we recorded the second album. We put out two albums with Power Trio del Sur, and we’re definitely going to release a third album sometime next year.

Here we go back to the beginning: what drove him to drive so far from home to play, or record with two talented musicians from deep in the interior, he said nearly 60 years ago, writing rock songs in Spain Is it okay to speak English? “My motivation is exactly the same as my first day on stage in Rosario: emotion. I didn’t realize it at the time, but I do now, music makes you a better person and it helps other people , it’s healing, but also because it’s one person’s work.
