Parliament unanimously passes motion for a resolution to stop the expansion and decommissioning of the Krško nuclear power plant

Vienna (OTS) “We have been discussing the danger posed to the Austrian population by the Krško nuclear power plant for years. The reactor, which is structurally and technically unprepared for an earthquake, is located in a tectonically and seismically active area. Just five kilometers east of Krško, an earthquake measuring 2.7 on the Richter scale occurred at the end of November. If there had been an accident here, it would have endangered not only the population of Slovenia, but also those of the states bordering the nuclear power plant,” says Martin Litschauer, anti-nuclear spokesman for the Green Party, and states: “I am therefore pleased that that yesterday we unanimously passed a five-party motion in parliament to stop the expansion and decommission the power plant. “The federal government is using all means at its disposal to oppose the planned expansion of the Krško nuclear power plant and is committed to decommissioning the existing reactor block, which is prone to failure.”

“Austria’s decision to decommission the old reactor during the recent environmental impact assessment to extend its operating life was ignored. A short time later, the reactor had to be shut down due to a leak. The question arises as to how thoroughly the nuclear power plant was checked when the next accident occurs a few months later,” emphasizes Litschauer and says: “It is clear once more: the Krško nuclear power plant is outdated and must finally be shut down. The Slovenian operator is acting negligently and endangering the safety not only of the Slovenian population, but of the whole of Europe.”
