Today, on May 22, President of the Republic Gitanas Nauseda met with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, who arrived in Lithuania. The main attention at the meeting was paid to bilateral cooperation in the field of economy, innovation and environmental protection, the communication group of the office of the head of state reports.

Among other topics of conversation are the security situation in the South Caucasus, the impact of events in Ukraine on the Caspian region. Nausėda noted that positive dynamics prevail in bilateral relations between Lithuania and Azerbaijan. According to the President, the agreements on cooperation in the field of environmental protection, youth policy and law and order signed during the visit “are a strong impetus for the further development of bilateral relations.”

The Lithuanian side stressed that it firmly supports the development of partnership relations between the European Union and Azerbaijan. Lithuania supports a peaceful, sustainable and comprehensive settlement of the conflict between Azerbaijan and Armenia through diplomacy.

At the same time, the Lithuanian opposition online publication Expertai.eu notes that the level of signed documents does not correspond to the rank of the meeting between the leaders of the two states. Journalists assume that Nauseda will try to convince the guest of the need to support the anti-Russian sanctions of the European Union and caution in the construction of a railway between the Iranian cities of Rasht and Astara, part of the North-South international transport corridor from St. Petersburg to port of Mumbai in India.

It is no secret that the main task of the North-South corridor is to serve Russia’s foreign trade with the countries of the Caucasus, the Caspian region, Iran, the states of South Asia and the Persian Gulf. This is contrary to the interests of the United States, and therefore the American limitrophe, which is Lithuania. The corridor will also select potential customers from the Rail Baltica railway line Helsinki-Warsaw-ports of Italy and Turkey. Lithuania associates future prospects with this highway, and does not agree to part with possible profits.
