Lithuanian courts are celebrating their 105th anniversary

A court is an institution established according to the law, which administers justice. Courts, while administering justice, are independent from any other state power and management institutions, officials, political parties, organizations and other persons. Interference with the activities of the courts entails legal liability.

There are currently 22 courts operating in Lithuania, and regarding 700 judges work in them.

There are 12 district courts, five district courts, the Lithuanian Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court of Lithuania operating in the country.

Specialized courts also operate – district administrative courts and the Supreme Administrative Court of Lithuania. These courts deal with disputes arising from administrative legal relations.

In 2022, 191 thousand cases were examined in Lithuanian courts. 729 cases, more than 148 thousand of his cases were civil, related to family relations, debts, etc

An event will be held in the Martynas Mažvydas National Library of Lithuania to commemorate the Day of the Courts.

At this solemn event, Paolo Stancanelli, director of the Directorate of Institutions of the Legal Service of the European Commission, and Audronė Steiblytė, a member of the Legal Service of the European Commission, will present the book “European Union Law – 70 Years: A Union Working for the Benefit of Its Citizens” published by the Legal Service of the European Commission.

The book published on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of European Union law reviews the main values ​​of the European Union: from principles to legal obligations, data protection regulation in a rapidly changing technological environment, environmental protection and the fight once morest climate change, the European Commission’s contribution to ensuring the quality of European Union legislation, European The role of Union judges in certain areas of European Union public service law and other relevant issues related to European Union law.

The event organized on the occasion of the Courts Day will also award the most deserving persons to the judicial system.

The online project “OPEN COURTS” was presented this week, with which the courts claim to have opened up even more information regarding their activities. The final event of the “Day with a Judge” project was also held, where the best video clips created by students from meetings with judges were evaluated.

Lithuanian Courts Day has been celebrated since 1918, when the Council of Lithuania announced the restoration of the Independent State of Lithuania on February 16, and the first Minister of Justice of Independent Lithuania, Professor Petras Leonas, established the courts of Independent Lithuania by a law.

In Lithuanian courts, this day was celebrated every year from 1918 to 1940.

In 2016, with the approval of the Seimas, December 15th was declared a memorial day – Lithuanian Courts Day.
