The production won two awards for best director and best actor at the Locarno Film Festival in Switzerland last week.
The film “Sisters” is the director’s second film, nominated as a Lithuanian contender for the “Oscar” awards.
According to the chairman of the commission, Neringa Kažukauskaitė, the film “Sisters” is distinguished by the director’s original thinking, a unique way of telling, the courage of creative searches, and an excellent acting ensemble.
“This film in the international context further consolidates the notion that Lithuania also produces original cinema of high artistic quality, which can be interesting and appreciated all over the world, successfully competing in prestigious festivals or awards,” she said.
The action of the film “Sisters” takes place on a hot summer day. Two couples come to the farmhouse to spend a quiet weekend – Justė with her family and Ernesta with her son and her husband, who has just celebrated a victory in the martial arts ring. Lake, outdoor terrace with grill, conversations about life and future plans – everything as usual. However, it soon becomes clear that under the idyllic exterior of the relationship lie unspoken feelings, jealousy and competition. It’s only a matter of time before it all comes to the surface.
Having passed the selection of the Lithuanian committee, the film Sesės” will continue to be evaluated by other committees of the academy. They will evaluate contender films from all over the world and announce five finalists, only one of whom will be awarded an Oscar.
In 2023, Marija Kavtaradze’s film “You Don’t Remember Me” became a contender for Oscar nominees in the international feature film category, and in 2022, Lauryns Bareiša’s debut feature film “Pilgrimai”.
The selection of the contender for the “Oscar” election is organized by the Lithuanian Cinema Center and the Lithuanian Union of Cinematographers.
The movie “Sisters” will be shown in Lithuania from September 20.
