According to Ramūnas Bikulčius, interim head of Litgrid’s Strategy Department, the price of electricity rose in March due to warmer weather, which resulted in lower electricity consumption throughout the region, a stable high generation of hydroelectric power plants and wind power plants, as well as 10 times higher production of solar power plants than in February.

“On March 11, for the first time since the closing of the Ignalina NPP, the daily production of Lithuanian power plants was higher than the daily consumption. “Usually, Lithuania used to import most of its electricity needs, but the growing integration of renewable energy resources in recent years allows us to produce more and more ourselves,” said R. Bikulčius in the report.

According to him, renewable resource power plants provided about 59 percent. Lithuanian electricity consumption.

According to R. Bikulčiaus, after Finland repaired the third reactor of the Olkiluoto nuclear power plant for a whole month and the two “Fosmark” reactors began to be repaired in Sweden, the supply of electricity in the region decreased last month.

According to Litgrid, the price of electricity in Latvia and Estonia was the same as in Lithuania in March. At that time, the price of electricity in the northern trading zones of Scandinavia increased by more than a quarter to 50 euros per (MWh)

The highest price of electricity last month was fixed in Poland – 75 euros, in Germany the price of electricity increased by 6 percent. up to 65 euros per MWh.

Electricity consumption in Lithuania reached 1030 GWh (gigawatt hours) in March – 6 percent. less than in February.

Electricity production in Lithuania grew by 9 percent per month. up to 612 GWh, and local power plants provided 59 percent. consumption of the country.

Compared to February, the production of wind power plants remained similar in March and reached 300 GWh, solar power plants grew 10 times to 93 GWh. At that time, the production of thermal power plants decreased by 36 percent. up to 62 GWh, hydropower plants – 4 percent. up to 93 GWh.

The total import flow was 53 percent. consumption of the country. In March, imports to Lithuania reached 660 GWh – 5 percent. less than in February.
