Listeria Outbreak: Important Information on Rizo-Lopez Foods Recall

2024-02-07 21:03:47

It’s time to clear out your refrigerator for a critical health reason.

Following a Feb. 6 recall, all cheese, crema, yogurt and sour cream products from the Rizo-López Foods facility are affected. Among these are Queso Fresco and Cotija cheese, distributed nationwide under various brand names, including 365 Whole Foods Market.

Furthermore, in light of a listeria outbreak, seven-layer bean dip, chicken enchiladas, cilantro salad dressing and taco kits sold at stores like Costco, Trader Joe’s and Albertson’s are part of the growing recalls of products made by Rizo Lopez Foods, Inc., of Modesto, California, federal health officials said.

Dairy products made by Rizo Lopez Foods are the source of the listeria outbreak that has killed two people and sickened more than two dozen since 2014, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Here’s what Texas shoppers need to know regarding the recall and Listeria:

Symptoms of listeria

Invasive listeriosis denotes the spread of bacteria beyond the intestines, leading to severe illness. Symptoms typically emerge within two weeks of consuming contaminated food.

For pregnant individuals, symptoms include fever and flu-like manifestations such as muscle aches and fatigue. In non-pregnant individuals, symptoms encompass fever, flu-like symptoms, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, and seizures.

What is listeria?

Listeria is a bacteria that can contaminate many foods and primarily affects pregnant people and their newborns, adults age 65 or older, and people with weakened immune systems, according to the CDC. Although other people can be infected, they rarely become seriously sick. When one is infected with Listeria, this infection is called listeriosis.

Listeria treatment

Infection is usually diagnosed when a laboratory test detects Listeria in body tissue or fluid, such as blood or spinal fluid, according to the CDC.

Treatment depends on the kind and severity of a person’s illness. Mostinfections are treated with antibiotics. People with diarrhea should drink plenty of fluids.

Is listeria contagious?

You can’t pass listeriosis to another person unless a pregnant person passes it to the fetus, according to the Cleveland Clinic.

What do you do if you bought these items?

Do not eat any recalled items. If you have purchased any cheese or dairy products from these brands, return them or throw them away. According to the CDC, Listeria can survive in the refrigerator and are easily spread. Clean the refrigerator, containers and surfaces these items may have contaminated.
