As every year, the Walloon employment office has drawn up a list of shortage occupations. It now includes 66 critical positions for which employers are having difficulty recruiting, as well as 92 shortage occupations, characterized by a lack of candidates.
This new list sees in particular the disappearance of some 22 professions (real estate agent, credit adviser and industrial maintenance manager), while 42 new professions are appearing (asbestos remover, driver of agricultural and forestry machinery, beautician, optician or even pharmacist).
As in previous years, the construction sector remains the most represented in the list with 56 professions, ranging from scaffolders to natural stone cutters.
The regional body also observes an increase in occupations in recruitment tension compared to last year. Despite the war in Ukraine and the ensuing energy and inflationary crises, Forem collected 476,000 job offers in 2022, i.e. 8.2% more than in 2021.
Several functions suffer from more structural recruitment difficulties, further observes the Forem. Among these, some stand out for the predominance of a large number of workers approaching retirement age, “who risk not being replaced in the years to come”. Thus, for 44 of the 158 functions on the list, at least a third of their workers are over 50. This is particularly the case for the professions of truck driver, nurse or roofer.
