Katrin Schumacher’s debut novel “List of Remaining Things” combines opulent still lifes, young love and natural romance.
In the first week the place wasn’t a place, but a hut. You had to stumble down a large part of the slope; the boards and handrails that were once supposed to secure the path had become obstacles over time.” Those stumbling down the slope are Mirren and Kato, two young women and a very young couple in love. They have rented “the place” – a small house in need of renovation on an overgrown piece of land – which they are now remodeling according to their ideas. With a lot of color and enthusiasm, they create a common place that serves as a refuge for them. A snail shell for those newly in love, in which “the cobwebs were breathtaking sails that floated and brought the rooms to life.”
Painter wants to keep pictures
Kato makes her money by recreating food from old paintings, arranging still lifes and setting up long tables based on well-known paintings. Mirren is a painter who is reluctant to give away her pictures. She would like to keep everyone around her, but every now and then she has to sell one to secure her livelihood. Then she paints the picture once more for herself. It is told from her perspective in the first person, partly in the present, partly in flashbacks, especially regarding the time when she and Kato met each other, “in the city abroad” and “in the city at home “. Now they are on the land that they are taking over together, that’s how you might see it.
