The “list of conditions” drawn up by the team of Lebanese President Michel Aoun overthrew the meeting that was scheduled for Tuesday between Aoun and Prime Minister-designate Najib Mikati, and also overthrew with it the possibility of forming the new Lebanese government regarding a month before the end of Aoun’s term.
Asharq Al-Awsat learned that Mikati postponed a visit that was scheduled for today to the Republican Palace, following he received, through mediators, a list submitted by Aoun’s team that includes a set of demands that the government must fulfill, or pledge to fulfill, including the approval of appointments in the first category, for those close to Aoun. and his political team, and the demands also include the dismissal of the governor of the Banque du Liban and the appointment of Antoine Choucair, who is close to the president, as his replacement.
Sources briefed on the ongoing negotiations on forming the government said that Aoun did not drop his previous request to appoint six ministers of state in the government, which Mikati had previously rejected. She also indicated that Aoun also stipulated that Mikati and Interior Minister Faisal Mawlawi sign a nationality decree prepared by the Republican Palace departments, and Mawlawi or Mikati refused to sign it previously. And the “Lebanon 24” website, which is close to Mikati, had published, yesterday evening, Monday, that political contacts regarding the government file are continuing, and therefore there is no visit by the Prime Minister-designate, Najib Mikati, to Baabda tomorrow (today), as was reported in some media outlets.
