An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.4, whose epicenter lay in the sea near Lisbon, caused concern on Monday morning in Portugal. The shock was felt by residents of the capital and other Portuguese regions. The Office of Civil Protection has not issued a tsunami warning. The government called for calm, writes the Lusa agency.

The Portuguese government urged residents to remain calm after the strong tremor. The cabinet said in a statement that authorities have so far reported no damage or casualties.
The tremor caused concern among residents and emergency lines received significantly more calls than usual for a Monday morning. The Civil Protection Office said it did not issue a tsunami warning because it never does so for earthquakes below magnitude six.
Lisbon was almost completely leveled by an earthquake and subsequent tsunami in 1755. Based on the damage, experts estimated the strength of the tremors at the time to be 8.7 to nine degrees.
