A medical team from Necker Hospital performed an in utero operation to save an unborn child from an aneurysm. A world first.

An exceptional operation. A team of doctors from the Necker hospital, in the 15th arrondissement of Paris, operated on September 8 on little Lisandro suffering from a Galen aneurysm, a rare malformation, while he was still in the belly of his mother, report this friday The Parisian. This is a first in the world.

This is not the first time that doctors have performed an intervention in utero, but never had an operation been done for an aneurysm of the vein of Galen, a very rare malformation of the blood networks located in the brain. which affects only regarding ten people a year.

The treatment probably saved the boy, as this type of aneurysm in most cases leads to the death of the patient following a few months or years.

“Big white spots on the brain”

His parents learn of the malformation from which their future child suffers during the third ultrasound check-up. “On the screen, we saw large white spots in the brain,” says Élodie, who then sees her doctor look worried.

On the advice of the practitioner, the couple went to the Necker hospital where the fetus was diagnosed with an aneurysm of the vein of Galen. After several examinations, the diagnosis is made: the unborn baby presents an 88% risk of not surviving and in the event that he survives, might suffer from a serious handicap.

Due to the low vital prognosis envisaged for the fetus, the couple is offered by the doctors to resort to a therapeutic abortion. He can also choose to carry the pregnancy to term, knowing that the risk of giving birth to a non-viable child is high.

Parents finally have a third possibility: an operation in utero. The intervention is unprecedented, but no matter. Both do not hesitate and give the green light to the Necker hospital.

Twenty doctors present for the operation

The operation is performed the next day when Élodie is 33 weeks pregnant.

“We felt that what was happening was not trivial,” says Marco, the father, present in the block at the time of this historic intervention.

In fact, he is not alone since regarding twenty doctors and future practitioners are also on site to attend this event.

Performed using a simple needle, avoiding any wounds, the operation is delicate, but goes perfectly. After 45 minutes, the procedure is over.

A “miracle baby”

The delivery is triggered five weeks later and Élodie thus gives birth on October 15 to little Lisandro, without complication.

The infant unfortunately finds the white coats shortly followingwards, but three operations later, is much better. Aged almost 8 months today, Lisandro is considered “cured”, as one of the doctors who operated on him, Olivier Naggara, says daily.

For the couple, it is a “miracle baby”. “Between us, we call the doctor the ‘doctor with the golden hands'”, they smile.

The operation was such a success that it has already spread. In the United States, a similar operation took place last March in Boston.
