Lio Denounces ‘the Complicity of an Entire Community’ in the Depardieu Affair: The Singer’s Candid Thoughts

The singer Lio, speaking on the set of “C l’hebdo”, discusses the Depardieu affair and denounces “the complicity of an entire community” on “everything that we have been able to do on a set for years” .

The singer Lio in turn reacts to the Depardieu affair. In an extract from C l’hebdo, broadcast on social networks, ahead of the show this Saturday evening on France 5, the singer first responds to Patrick Chesnais, who declared on our antenna last December 28 that the Gérard Depardieu’s comments in North Korea, revealed by the program Complément d’investigation, were “not so serious”.

“I just regret that this old world still has so much power. Because for me, they are buffoons,” says the singer.

“We cannot reduce the remarks of the Depardieu affair and the entire Depardieu affair to the fact that he speaks of the rubbing of the clitoris of a little 10-year-old girl, who is too far away to hear it,” adds she said.

“Behaviors that destroy”

“It’s all that we can do on a set for years with the complicity of an entire community, which is in question today. These are unacceptable behaviors which destroy. I was the victim, I am not the only one.”

Lio also evokes, in another extract, the experience of his sister, the actress and singer Helena Noguerra.

“We told her before (she met him), ‘you know, he touches your breasts, he puts his hands in your pants, but following all it’s Gérard'”.

Invited at the end of December to speak on BFMTV on the Depardieu affair, the actor Patrick Chesnais denounced the “unbearable” treatment reserved for the actor since the broadcast of Complément d’investigation on France 2.

“Today, we are in the era of suspicion, of accusation,” believes Patrick Chesnais. “It is the popular court of opinion and rumor that makes the law. (…) Justice must do its job and until then, we must stop throwing a guy who is a national monument, because it is a little crude, outrageously bawdy or saucy.”

“This little girl was 100m away and he continues his spiel in his corner and he goes all out, it’s no more serious than that. We can disagree and be shocked but (…) we don’t put Gérard Depardieu’s head on the block for that, it’s unbearable”, the actor was indignant.

Since the broadcast of Complément d’investigation on France 2 on December 7, the world of culture, and even French society, has been torn apart over what has become the Depardieu affair.

Tribunes and debates

At the origin of the controversy, unpublished images of Gérard Depardieu’s trip to North Korea in 2018, made public by the France Télévisions program. One sequence in particular angered some viewers. In a stud farm, he states that “women love to ride horses (because) their clits rub on the saddle (…) they enjoy a lot”.

Since then, the forums have multiplied, to defend or on the contrary denounce the conduct of the actor and the system which allowed it. The President of the Republic, Emmanuel Macron himself took part in the debate by denouncing the “manhunt” of which Gérard Depardieu would be the victim. The government spokesperson, Olivier Véran, indicated on Thursday on BFMTV and RMC that the actor’s comments “shock” him.
