Linz SPÖ officials unanimously express their trust in Luger

Luger had asked for a vote of confidence at the annual meeting of the Linz SPÖ in Lower Austria on Wednesday. After a substantive discussion, 31 participants voted. Luger received 100 percent of the vote of confidence.

In addition, Luger announced that he is resigning from his position as Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the Linzer Veranstaltungsgesellschaft (LIVA) with immediate effect and will no longer perform his role as owner representative of LIVA.

Confidential chats between Linz Mayor Klaus Luger (SP) and Dietmar Kerschbaum were made public the day before the planned meeting of the Linz SPÖ municipal council group – the OÖN reported exclusively. These prove that Luger passed the questions on to Kerschbaum before the hearing and also show that Luger and Kerschbaum knew each other – something the mayor had denied until recently and that he had misinformed the public in recent months.

“Excessive reactions”

“The result clearly shows that the leaders of the Linz SPÖ are united behind Mayor Klaus Luger. He made a mistake, there is no way to sugarcoat it,” said SPÖ parliamentary group leader Stefan Giegler. However, he also viewed the approval as “an appreciation for an overall assessment of the mayor’s commitment.”

TV talk with OÖN culture chief Peter Grubmüller:

Luger also wants to be actively involved in the further investigation of the matter, said state manager Florian Koppler in a press release. “He is absolutely aware that he allowed himself to be carried away and made a mistake – which he deeply regrets,” said Koppler. He described the opposition’s reactions as excessive.

VP considers motion of no confidence

Now that the mayor seems to be firmly in the saddle for the SPÖ, ÖVP deputy mayor Martin Hajart is now considering a motion of no confidence. He wants to coordinate with the other factions. From the current perspective, the necessary two-thirds majority is unlikely to be achieved, as the SPÖ has 22 of 61 municipal council mandates.
