Linz ÖVP wants to extend the tram to the Digital University

The planning vision, i.e. the master plan for the future development of the university district, was the topic of the Linz City Senate today. As reported, this aims to enable companies to settle there.

With the votes of the SPÖ and ÖVP there was a majority in favor, the FPÖ abstained, the Greens voted against. Climate City Councilor Eva Schobesberger (Greens) fears the destruction of the green belt and warns against further soil sealing. City Councilor for Security Michael Raml (FP) says that in principle there is nothing wrong with looking at development opportunities in the university district. However, potential reallocations would have to be carefully considered if he wants to coordinate with his group.

The master plan development is scheduled to start in December, and the architecture competition for the Digital University, which will be located near the Science Park, is already underway. For traffic officer Martin Hajart (VP), the Digital University is an “opportunity of the century”. This needs optimal transport connections. In addition to the planned regional light rail, Hajart is bringing the extension of the tram to the new university location into play.

This extension should take place from the current end point above ground via the Aubrunnerweg and end in a common tram and light rail stop; behind it, a new reversal loop would have to be built. Hajart sees great potential in this measure and such a link between light rail and trams, but there is no decision or financing plan yet.

For Mayor Klaus Luger (SP), the proposed extension raises the cost-benefit question; the list of outstanding planning issues alone is long.
