After several weeks of development and testing, Linus Torvalds has finally announced the availability of Linux 6.8. The kernel update brings a variety of new features and significant improvements that promise to make it more efficient and stable.

The software creator claims that this is not a major update — like Linux 6.7 was. However, the new kernel version has several preparations to support future generations of hardware, including AMD’s Zen 5 processors, as well as “several random updates and fixes throughout”, according to Torvalds.

One of the highlights is the beginning of experiments with the new driver Xe DRM, which will power integrated and dedicated graphics from Intel. Additionally, a tweak to the frequency scaling driver for Intel’s Core Ultra processors will allow these chips to reach their promised maximum speeds on Linux.

Linux 6.8 also adds support for Raspberry Pi 5 in the V3D DRM driver, as well as introducing support for GPUTop and FDINFO. With this, any distribution that combines the Mesa 23.3 API with Linux 6.8 will be able to provide a solid, out-of-the-box graphics experience on the miniature computer without the need for patches additional.

The release notes also mention fixes for the new Bcachefs file system, introduced to the kernel in the previous version, highlighting its error correction features, adaptive caching and native encryption.

For Linux gamers, improvements include support for Lenovo Legion Go controllers, Nintendo Switch Online, and color management on the Steam Deck.

Out of curiosity, Linus Torvalds states that Linux 6.8 reached the mark of 9.996 million Git objects — that is, the fundamental data storage units in a Git repository. As a result, the expectation is that Linux 6.9 — already in the development phase — will surpass the mark of 10 million Git objects.

Linux 6.8 is now available on the organization’s official website. The expectation is that the distros will be updated to the new kernel version over the next few months.
