“Not all robots are robust and reliable enough to meet industrial challenges.” While the American start-up Agility Robotics launched the marketing of its bipedal robot called Digit in March, Jean-Pierre Gazeau, CNRS research engineer and head of the RoBioSS (Robotics Biomechanics Sport and Health) team, tempers the progress in the sector, despite “many convincing demonstrations, such as those of Boston Dynamics with their Spot or Atlas robots.” The adventures of their machines regularly make the rounds of the Web thanks to offbeat videos, the fruits of filming complicated by the regular falls and breakdowns of quadruped robots. In a presentation video, Agility Robotics shows its Digit robot transporting a box in a warehouse, suggesting a main use for logistics environments. A demonstration whose realism questions. Can quadruped, biped, or even humanoid robots compete with simple rolling carts for industrial uses?
