The New Factory. – How does McKinsey position itself on quantum computing?
Stephane Bout. – It started in 2015 with the acquisition of an artificial intelligence (AI) start-up, QuantumBlack, which became the spearhead of AI at McKinsey. With a name like this, we were predestined to work on the subject… For several years, we have been publishing analyzes of the quantum computing market from several angles: that of the ecosystem – hardware manufacturers, services – and that of use cases, focusing on the potential value creation of technology in different sectors. It is necessary that large groups position themselves now and explore use cases in anticipation of the arrival of the quantum computer. It is a powerful technology, but one that takes a long time to learn and for which there is a shortage of experts. This remains an underexplored area, where opportunities for creating intellectual property can become competitive advantages. This is why we have created this year a dedicated department to support companies in their adoption of quantum computing. We work in this context with French actors who are experts in the subject, such as the start-up Alice & Bob.
