Premenstrual syndrome, postpartum depression, menopausal disorders: during these periods when female hormones “go yo-yo”, the risk of suffering from depression or mood disorders increases, and it is not without danger , especially for a mother and her baby. But it all depends on how each woman reacts to these hormonal fluctuations, what is called her “hormone sensitivity”. However, these variations in mood also exist when taking a hormonal contraceptive. Researchers at the University of Copenhagen therefore wondered whether suffering from depressive symptoms following taking hormonal contraception might predict postpartum depression, the aim being to better follow the women most at risk of it. be reached following their first pregnancy.

Thus, of the 188,648 women, aged 27 on average, whom the researchers followed and who gave birth for the first time between 1996 and 2017, those who suffered from depression following taking a hormonal contraceptive had a 40% risk in addition to suffering from postpartum depression than young women who have already had depressive symptoms, but not related to contraception – the latter also having a 70% higher risk of suffering from postpartum depression compared to women n having never had depressive symptoms in their entire life.

Proof that some are more sensitive to hormonal variations and should be better supported during their first pregnancy, and that contraception sometimes increases the risk of suffering from mood disorders!
