Seven people were arrested in Belgium in a major anti-terrorism operation on the eve of the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympics. The federal judicial police in Antwerp said searches were carried out in several cities across the country – Seraing, Antwerp, Saint-Josse-ten-Noode, Menen, Bourg-Léopold, Liège, Kortrijk, Ghent and Zonhoven – but did not release details on the potential targets of those arrested. The prosecutor’s office said it would not provide further information “in the interest of the investigation”.

“All the people involved are suspected of participating in the activities of a terrorist group, financing terrorism and preparing a terrorist attack. Their specific targets have not yet been determined,” the police said, as reported by Le Soir. The Belgian daily reveals that “this series of searches is part of a European operation coordinated by several judicial and intelligence authorities” and “targets a group of individuals mainly from Central Asia who claim to belong to the Islamic State in Khorasan”. The infamous Isis-K that recently struck at the Crocus Hall in Moscow. According to the reconstruction, the Belgian and European authorities intervened on the eve of the opening ceremony of the Olympics “as a preventive measure” against a potential target such as the Paris Games.
