[Compiler Lin Jiayu/Comprehensive Report]The medical journal “Hypertension” (Hypertension) published a research report on the relationship between Wuhan pneumonia (new coronavirus disease, COVID-19) virus and hypertension on the 21st, pointing out that patients infected with Wuhan pneumonia virus Among them, more than 1/5 of the severe patients were diagnosed with high blood pressure, which is regarding twice that of the general patients.

The researchers examined the medical records of more than 45,000 Wuhan pneumonia patients and nearly 14,000 influenza patients in the Bronx, New York, between 2020 and 2022, and followed them for six months. None of these subjects had a history of hypertension before infection. The results showed that 21% of Wuhan pneumonia patients were subsequently diagnosed with high blood pressure, regarding twice the 11% rate of general patients, and more than one-fifth of them were diagnosed with high blood pressure during hospitalization.

Compared with influenza, the possibility of developing high blood pressure in severe cases of Wuhan pneumonia is 2.23 times that of severe cases of influenza. The possibility of mild hypertension in Wuhan pneumonia is more than 50% higher than that in mild influenza.

The study also found several commonalities among patients diagnosed with high blood pressure following the epidemic: those over 40 years old, African-Americans; and those with pre-existing conditions such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, coronary artery disease, or chronic kidney disease. In addition, most of the research subjects come from communities with lower socioeconomic status, and poverty factors such as stress and less access to healthy diets can also increase the risk of hypertension.

Study author Tim Duong, a professor of diagnostic imaging at the Einstein College of Medicine, said at a press conference, “Comparing Wuhan pneumonia patients and influenza patients, the data reveals that more patients may be highly ill in the future. Blood pressure. This might have a significant public health burden.”

As for how the Wuhan pneumonia virus triggers high blood pressure, scientists can only speculate that the Wuhan pneumonia virus may infect heart cells and disrupt the blood pressure, or it may be caused by acute kidney injury, a common severe complication of Wuhan pneumonia.

The report concludes that long-term follow-up studies can further understand the relationship between hypertension and Wuhan pneumonia virus, and the current information only provides physicians with attention to related phenomena. Tim Yang said, “These studies should raise the attention of patients who are in the high-risk zone of hypertension following Wuhan pneumonia infection, so that early identification and treatment of hypertension-related complications, such as cardiovascular or renal diseases, can be carried out.”
