Link Between Severe Covid-19 Infection and Increased Risk of Cancer: A Study’s Findings

For the first time, a study suggests a link between a severe Covid-19 infection and a diagnosis of cancer in the following months.

People with frailty factors are more at risk of developing a severe form of Covid-19. As part of a new study, researchers wanted to determine whether – conversely – developing a severe form of Covid-19 might represent a predictive marker for undiagnosed cancers. To do this, they analyzed data from the National Health Data System (SNDS) relating to 41,302 people hospitalized in intensive care because of Covid-19 in order to compare them with 713,670 control people.

According to this study, patients hospitalized in intensive care because of Covid-19 have a 31% increased risk of being diagnosed with cancer in the following months. These findings were published in the journal Scientific Reports. Specifically, 2.2% of patients were diagnosed with cancer in the following months compared to 1.5% (within 200 days on average) in the control group. A significantly higher risk was found for kidney, colon, lung or hematological cancers.

Women, more vulnerable

Quoted by doctor’s dailyProfessor Mahmoud Zureik, professor of immunology at the University Versailles Saint-Quentin and director of Epi-Phare explains that these results do not make it possible to establish a “causal effect” between a serious infection and cancer. However, a severe infection”might represent an undiagnosed cancer marker. The state of immunosuppression may perhaps hide an underlying cancer not yet detected”. According to this study, the strongest association was observed by limiting the follow-up period to the first three months, in women but also in those under 60 years of age.

As relayed by the Quotidien du Médecin, Professor Zureik invites closer monitoring: “Patients leaving intensive care or intensive care following severe Covid already have an increased risk of mortality. It is therefore useful to monitor them, especially since they are exposed to sequelae, in particular pulmonary.
