Link Between Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) and Stroke Risk: A New Study

A new study shows that people with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) are more likely to have a stroke, compared to people without the disease, according to the study, which was published in the journal Neurology and reported by Medical Express.

Inflammatory bowel disease causes chronic inflammation of the intestines. It includes Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, and unclassified inflammatory bowel disease.

The study found that people with IBD were 13 percent more likely to have a stroke up to 25 years following their diagnosis than people without IBD.

Study author Jiangui Sun, Ph.D., of the Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm, Sweden, said: “These findings show that people with IBD and their physicians should be aware of this increased long-term risk. Examination and control of stroke risk factors may be even more urgent.” in patients with inflammatory bowel disease.

The study included 85,006 people with biopsy-confirmed IBD. They were each matched with up to five people of the same year of birth, sex and county of residence who did not have IBD, for a total of 406,987 people.

During an average follow-up of 12 years, 3,720 of those with IBD had a stroke, compared to 15,599 of those without IBD.
