[L’industrie c’est fou] The “Humane AI pin”, a smartphone without a smartphone

The smartphone is described as an extension of our hand. So why not use our hand directly as a screen? The idea is wacky, and yet… Madame Irma may soon no longer be the only one reading your palms. Former Apple design director Imran Chaudhri designed within his start-up Humane a small but surprising portable projector, the “Humane AI Pin”. Pinned to clothing, the pin provides the same functionalities as a smartphone, but without the object as such… The size of a thumb, this pin projects applications, calls or voice assistance onto any surface. Projecting this information onto the palm of your hand obviously remains the most instinctive. Equipped with cameras to scan the environment, speakers, optical sensors to allow computer interactions, the Humane AI Pin does not need any electrical device to operate… A resolutely colorful gadget!

A funny demonstration at TED2023

It’s in Vancouver, Canada at the International Ideas Spreading Conference Series TED2023 (Technology, Entertainment and Design), that Imran Chaudhri unveiled the functionalities of the Humane AI Pin with a funny demonstration. The pin hanging from his jacket, palm facing him, the co-founder of Humane presented the public with a flashing signal on his fingers, indicating a call from his wife, Bethany Bongiorno, also a former employee ofApple.

Imran Chaudhri then pronounced this sentence: “I’m going to have to get this” (“I’m going to have to take it”), a vocal signal triggering the conversation between the two bride and groom. Imran Chaudhri then asked the Humane AI Pin for the perfect place to quickly find a gift for his wife, while touching the pin with his finger. A few seconds were enough for the artificial intelligence to provide a concise answer: “Granville Island, in Vancouver.”

A guardian angel projector

Beyond its web search function, the Humane AI Pin can be used as a real voice assistant, or even personal assistant, by providing its user with advice on their daily decision-making. Imran Chaudhri illustrated this point during TED2023 by asking the pine tree if he might eat the chocolate bar he was holding in his hands. The projector’s answer, surely a bit contrived, turned out to be most logical: “Given your intolerance, you may want to avoid it.”

For its creator, the Humane AI Pin will redefine our relationship to technology. Could this invention herald the end of screens? The launch of the first projector, powered by a Snapdragon platform from the mobile technology specialist Qualcomm Technologiesis in any case expected in 2023.
