Do you remember Real Steel, this American blockbuster released in 2011 in which Hugh Jackman played a former professional boxer converted into robot fights? It is this science fiction film that inspired the development of Qibbot, the fastest remotely operated boxing robot in the world according to the Chinese company Qibo Robot Company, which presented it in June. On this occasion, she posted a video on YouTube in which a teleoperated Qibbot fights once morest a Qibbot with artificial intelligence.
With its latency of only 12 milliseconds – once morest more than 100 milliseconds for the vast majority of remotely operated robots according to the founder of Qibo -, its size of 1.90 m and its weight of 140 kilos for the version with a single arm, the machine controlled by a human at a distance has something to impress… Including professional boxers!

According to South China Morning Post, the Qibbot owes its exceptional performance to the predictive control which, by reacting in advance, compensates for some of the latency caused by the mechanical systems and the virtual reality platform of the robot which follows the movements of the user, as well as to improving the structure of the arm. For the three designers of the Qibbot, the fast-moving teleoperated robots might be used “in various emergency and dangerous situations, such as crime control and military operations”, explains the South China Morning Post. The company also claims that users would only need a minute to learn how to control the contraption.
Currently, remotely operated robots are used in medicine (surgery), in industry (for the dismantling of nuclear power plants, and, more generally, for interventions in dangerous or difficult to access places), or even to explore seabed. A second version of the Qibbot with two arms, more joints and more fluid movements should see the light of day by the end of the year. Enough to knock out all his opponents!
