[L’industrie c’est fou] Microscopic, the smallest bag on the planet sold for 63,000 dollars

This is a bag that will pass in cabin luggage without problem. Designed by a collective of artists from Brooklyn (USA) and unveiled mid-June on their page Instagram, it measures only a few hundred microns, barely more than a few hairs. It thus dethrones by far the previous holder of the record for the smallest bag in the world, the “Mini Le Chiquita” by Jacquemus, 5.2 cm wide.

Manufactured using stereolithography

To make this neon green accessory, which pays homage to one of Louis Vuitton’s most famous bags, the OnTheGo model, the collective used 3D printing. The group specifically opted for the stereolithography technique, which makes it possible to achieve very small sizes and which is widely used in the biotech sector. Although the bag is visible to the naked eye, it is impossible to distinguish the famous logo of the French brand or to store your wallet in it. To clearly see its shape, it is necessary to equip yourself with a microscope.

This improbable creation was sold at auction by the Joopiter auction house, founded by Pharrell Williams, musician and artistic director of Louis Vuitton’s men’s collections, for 63,000 dollars, while the price of the original bag oscillates between 2,500 and 3,300. euros. An astronomical sum for an object which has only the (microscopic) shape of a bag and which is more of an art object. With this creation, however, the MSCHF collective is not at its first attempt. In 2021, the group had created a pair of sandals from four copies of the Birkin, the emblematic Hermès bag, called… “Birkinstocks”.
