Archyde news: An Interview with lily-Rose depp on Her Intense “Nosferatu” Audition
Interviewer: Alex Hartley, Archyde’s Film Correspondent
Alex Hartley (AH): Lily-Rose, thank you for taking the time to speak with Archyde today.Your audition tape for “Nosferatu” has been making waves online. Director Robert Eggers has praised your ability to inhabit such a dark and vulnerable space. What drew you to the character of Ellen Hutter?
Lily-Rose Depp (LRD): thank you for having me, Alex. I’m glad the audition resonated with people. Ellen Hutter is a fascinating character. She’s this innocent woman who gets thrown into this horrifying situation, and her journey is about her descent into darkness, her struggle to hold onto her humanity, and her love for her husband. I found that transformation realy compelling.
AH: Your audition scene is remarkably raw.Can you walk us through your preparation process? what did you draw from to achieve such an intense performance?
LRD: When I first read the script, Ellen’s confrontation with her husband really jumped out at me. It’s the moment where her entire world comes crashing down. I wanted to portray that feeling of complete devastation and betrayal. I drew from experiences of heartbreak and loss, feelings we all understand on some level.
I also spent a lot of time researching. Ellen’s story is inspired by the folklore of the “Nosferatu” legend, so I immersed myself in that research. The physicality of the scene also helped me tap into Ellen’s emotional state. It was all about finding that balance between raw emotion and controlled performance.
AH: Speaking of physicality, the behind-the-scenes footage we’ve seen shows you really committing to ellen’s possession scenes. Can you tell us about the process behind those?
LRD: (Laughs) Yes, those scenes were quite intense. Ellen’s possession is her internal torment made manifest, so it was about finding a way to express that inner turmoil physically. I worked closely with our movement coach, and we experimented with different states of twitching, convulsing, and contorting. It was a challenging process, but it allowed me to delve deeper into Ellen’s psyche.
AH: Your dedication to the role is truly commendable. How did you take care of yourself emotionally while exploring such dark territory?
LRD: That’s a great question, Alex. Acting can be emotionally taxing, especially when you’re exploring heavy themes like this. I made sure to surround myself with a strong support system – friends, family, and fellow cast members. Meditation and journaling also helped me process and release those emotions.
AH: Your performance has already garnered critical acclaim. What do you hope audiences will take away from your portrayal of Ellen?
LRD: I hope audiences connect with Ellen’s journey, her struggle to maintain her humanity in the face of absolute horror.I think her story is a reminder that even in the darkest times, there’s a strength in us that can overcome tremendous adversity. And I hope it’s a powerful, emotional experience for viewers.
AH: Thank you, Lily-Rose, for giving us such insight into your process. We can’t wait for audiences to see your remarkable performance in “Nosferatu.”
LRD: Thank you, Alex. It’s been a pleasure chatting with you.
