Lily Allen: “My children destroyed my career – you can’t have it both ways”

2000s pop star Lily Allen is probably not a household name today – she says it’s because of her decision to have children. Because, according to her, career and motherhood are not compatible. And it annoys the mother of two when people say this.

The singer’s statements were then actively discussed in the media. “My children have destroyed my career, I love them and they complete me, but they have absolutely destroyed my life as a pop star,” said the now 38-year-old in an interview with “Radio Times”.

“Some people put their careers before their children, and that’s their right.” Allen made a different decision. “My parents were often not there when I was a child and that left scars.”

She didn’t want to repeat this pattern with her own children. She is happy to have focused on the family.

In 2006, the British Lilly Allen had her breakthrough as a singer with her debut single “Smile”. Five years later she became pregnant with her daughter. Allen was married to Sam Cooper (46) from 2011 to 2018. The two have two daughters, Ethel Mary, 12, and Marnie Rose, 11. In 2020 she married actor David Harbor (48). She lives in New York.
