The Bordeaux management is coming to an end. In an unlikely reversal of trend, David Guion, free since his departure from Reims in the spring of 2021, will succeed Vladimir Petkovic in Bordeaux. His name gathers unanimity among Girondin decision-makers. If the financial agreement has yet to be finalized, the 54-year-old technician is preparing, according to our information, to initialize an eighteen-month contract. He will have the difficult task of ensuring the maintenance of a club stuck in 19th place in the championship.
Since the departure of Vladimir Petkovic, which took place on Monday, February 7, the day following a 5-0 rout in Reims, David Guion had quickly emerged as the favorite of a short-list that also included Laurent Batlles, Sabri Lamouchi or David Bettoni, Zinedine Zidane’s former assistant in Madrid.
Revealed with Chambéry in the Coupe de France
Guion fulfills the specifications: namely a French-speaking technician with a good knowledge of Ligue 1. A former defender in Ligue 1 and Ligue 2, he repeated his ranges as assistant to Laurent Roussey at Saint-Étienne (in 2008) During the 2010-2011 Coupe de France, then coach of SO Chambéry, he reached the quarterfinals by eliminating three Ligue 1 clubs, Sochaux, Brest and AS Monaco. At the end of the season, he signed with AS Cannes. He then managed the formation and the reserve of Reims for five seasons (2012-2017), before being appointed at the head of the first team with very honorable results: rise to Ligue 1 in 2018, 8th place in 2019, 5th place in 2020 and 14th place last season.
He is expected to take office next Monday. Jaroslav Plasil and Andre Monteiro, who have been leading training since Tuesday, will therefore be on the bench on Sunday at Lens (17:05).
