Lightning struck the barn: “Eliminated the glow fires in the roof”

The emergency services in Vimmerby municipality received an alarm regarding the smell of smoke in an agricultural building in Sevedstorp at 5:35 p.m.

It is a lightning strike in a 50×10 meter barn building.

– Lightning has struck straight down through the roof and we have an increasing smell of smoke. It’s a real hit on the roof. It’s probably two by two meters off the roof, says Kenneth Söderberg.

The emergency services are currently investigating the building and aerial vehicles from Vimmerby are on their way to the scene.

– We do not have a visible fire, but we may have a construction fire that is up in the ceiling or in one of the joists. What we check is with a thermal imaging camera and tear out material to see that we don’t have an ongoing fire, says Söderberg.

Update 19.45:

The emergency services have managed to eliminate the smoldering fires which were concentrated on the roof of the barn building.

– We have broken up approximately 30 to 60 centimeters around the hole in the roof and what remains is to weatherproof the building, says Söderberg.

According to Söderberg, the lightning struck quite precisely in the middle of the building and in the middle of the roof.

– We had small smoldering fires that were up in the ceiling and the risk of spreading would have been great if we hadn’t found them. We are now placing a tarp over the hole created by the lightning strike and our work and will then leave the site.

No person and no animals were injured in connection with the lightning strike.
