A sad news tarnishes Colombian cycling: the ex-pedalist Samuel Cabrera, 61, He lost his life this Monday in the village of Pasuncha, in Pacho (Cundinamarca)..

His beginnings in the connecting rods occurred in 1980, when he debuted with the team of Ministry of Public Works. In 1981 he was part of the Aguardiente Superior squad, to later join the Yaneth Perfumery, and in 1983 he competed for the Café de Colombia.

According to the versions of José Cabrera, the victim’s brother, to Time, death was recorded while He was doing work on his farm when he was struck by lightning.

“We have little information, but what we do know is that he was on his farm, working and that it was raining, when lightning struck and killed him. We are waiting for more information to coordinate everything, but we understand that he was picking coffee, it was raining and lightning killed him,” he said.

As an active cyclist, Samuel Cabrera joined the Café de Colombia team and took part in several cycling competitions in the old continent such as the Tour de France, Giro d’Italia and Vuelta España.

He had six appearances in the Tour de France (1983, 1984, 1986, 1987, 1988 and 1989). In 1989 he took part in the Giro d’Italia and participated in the 1985, 1976, 1987 and 1988 Vuelta a España.

His good performances earned him to be signed by the Spanish team Reynolds in 1986. Another of his achievements was to become champion of the Tour of Guatemala in the eighties.

“He won the Tour of Guatemala in 1980 and I was on that team with him. He was a cheerful man. About three years ago we went to Pasuncha to pay tribute to him with Genaro Soler”, said Oliverio Cárdenas, another representative of national cycling.

Great cycling personalities as well as sports journalism and the national level, lamented this sudden and painful departure of Samuel Cabrera through their social networks.
