A new study shows that light-to-moderate alcohol consumption may reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, reports the Journal.Guardian“.
However, doctors still warn that the potential heart benefits don’t mean we should ignore alcohol’s other dangers.
“We do not advocate the use of alcohol to reduce the risk of heart attacks or strokes, given the presence of other worrisome effects on health,” said cardiologist Ahmed Tawakul, the lead author of the study, which was conducted by researchers from Massachusetts General Hospital in the United States.
The results of the new study, which involved 50,000 people, were published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology.
The researchers wanted to understand exactly how light to moderate drinking (one drink per day for women and one to two drinks per day for men) might reduce cardiovascular disease, as has been shown in many other previous studies.
The researchers examined a subgroup of 754 individuals who had previously undergone brain imaging to determine the effect of light-to-moderate alcohol consumption on resting neural network activity associated with stress.
Brain imaging showed reduced stress signals in the amygdala, a brain region associated with stress responses, in individuals who drank light to moderate alcohol compared with those who abstained from or drank less alcohol.
Also, the researchers found that light-to-moderate drinking was associated with nearly twice the heart-protective effect in individuals with a history of anxiety compared to others.
according toMayo ClinicUnderstanding the risks and any possible health benefits of alcohol can often be confusing because the evidence regarding potential health benefits with moderate alcohol use in otherwise healthy adults is uncertain.
The new study also showed that any amount of alcohol increased the risk of cancer.
She added that when drinking more amounts of alcohol – more than 14 drinks per week – the risk of heart attacks began to increase while general brain activity began to decline, which may be associated with a decline in human cognitive ability.
