Liga 1 2023 will have 3 direct relegations and there will be no promotion by Copa Perú, Peruvian football reform

The Peruvian Football Federation (FPF) released this Tuesday resolution 026-2022-FPF, where reforms for Peruvian soccer were announced. With Agustin Lozanopresident of the entity, as spokesman, it was detailed that in the 2023 season of the Liga 1 (First Division) there will be news regarding promotion and relegation issues.

The FPF pointed out that for Liga 1 2023 There will be 19 participating teams. From that year there will be no promotion from the Peru Cup and the clubs that wish to reach the highest category will do so only from League 2, with only two teams that will obtain that promotion. With this, there will be no revalidation matches between the casts of League 1 and Liga 2as happened in recent campaigns.

It was also specified that, from 2023, three clubs will be relegated directly to League 2 (Second Division), so that as of 2024 League 1 will have 18 teams.

League 1: there will be no Minutes Pool in 2023

Among the points announced in the reform of Peruvian soccer this Tuesday by Agustín Lozano, the elimination of the Minutes Exchange was mentioned as of 2023, a measure that forced teams to reach a number of game minutes for soccer players under 20 years of age. This decision is made for League 1 and League 2 matches.

The Minutes Exchange was present in the Peruvian First Division championship since the 2008 season and during each year there were modifications in the measure.

Likewise, regarding the 2022 Bicentennial Cup and the 2022 Super Cup, which were going to be played by Alianza Lima and Sporting Cristal, the Peruvian Football Federation specified that they are left without effect for this year.

The VAR arrives for League 1 in 2023

One of the most outstanding announcements in the reforms of Peruvian soccer is the implementation of video arbitration (VAR) from the 2023 season.

“In 2023, the FPF will implement the VAR system for all League 1 matches and they will be supervised by external audits,” said Agustín Lozano at a press conference.

“This VAR and its application, which will also have supervision, will have a stadium evaluation commission that will work from October to try to ensure that all stadiums where professional football is played have the infrastructure that allows this technology to be applied,” added the president of the FPF.

It should be noted that all the leagues in South America already have the implementation of VAR, with the exception of the first division tournaments in Peru and Venezuela.
