Life is a school. Good journalism. Francisco Graterol Vargas / By Pedro Frailán

The anecdote is a literary genre classified as a story, it is usually short, they are real experiences of people, uncommon in everyday life, which provoke astonishment, humor or nostalgia.

Francisco Graterol Vargas published a book entitled “Life is a school, good journalism.” This work certifies that the Valeran memory is a culture of doing journalism approximately three or four decades ago. Where two radio institutions such as Radio Valera, 1230 AM and Radio Turismo, 970 AM. The first with its star newscast was “The Informant 1230”while the station on Bolívar Avenue was “Radio Reporting”. The radio stations went out to different parts of the city to gather the most important and most immediate information.

The radio station on 10th Avenue used the Valmobiles and Radio Turismo used the Yellow Birds. These were cars equipped to transmit information, and were generally rustic.

Francisco describes the whole process of bringing the news to the listeners. But with a big difference: it is not only a description of the facts but a narration full of humor, both of individual and collective experiences, which allows the text to be free, pleasant, spontaneous, and is also accompanied by a series of caricatures in each chronicle.

Graterol Vargas, as a good journalist, an icon of this art, craft and profession in Trujillo, refreshes our memory of professional baseball in the now defunct summer league in the western part of the country. In this league, our state participated with the Proletarios, who were even champions of the first season. Its players, including Oswaldo Guillén, remind us of political figures such as Pedro Pablo Aguilar and Luis Mazarri, and experiences outside the country, such as in Cuba, with the leader of the 1958 revolution, Fidel Castro, and Luis Aparicio, among others.

Regarding Fidel Castro, who died on November 25, 2016, Graterol Vargas tells us a story that he personally had with the commander of the revolution, entitled “My meeting with Fidel Castro”. Although through an imaginary encounter, the journalist had already had an encounter, the most appropriate path had been the magic of literature.

In Trujillo literature, Antonio Pérez Carmona immortalized the beautiful Paulaprecisely with a novel written by himself. Francisco introduces us to this woman, but not as a fictional literary character, but with a real chronicle, a woman who liked to engage in politics in the midst of the international polarization between the USA and the USSR.

Life is a schoolis an anecdote from Valera’s recent history in the world of journalism, which is becoming more relevant every day. It is done day by day, as it should be, with high-level journalism, By the way, a title of one of his experiences that I recommend reading.
