The Cairo Criminal Court, convening at the Fifth Settlement Courts Complex, sentenced the accused, Abdullah Hamdi Al-Banbi, son of the former Minister of Petroleum, to life imprisonment, fined him 359,000 pounds, and dismissed him from his job, on charges of BriberyExempting the second and third accused who provided the bribe from punishment.
The ruling was issued under the chairmanship of Counselor Hamdy El-Shanoufi, President of the Court, and the membership of Counselors Abdel Basset El-Shazly and Khaled Abdel-Ghaffar El-Naggar, the two presidents of the Cairo Court of Appeal.
The investigations of the Public Prosecution revealed that the accused, Abdullah Hamdi Al-Banbi, head of the Central Department for Financial Affairs at the National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority, in his capacity as a public servant, requested and took gifts for himself in exchange for performing a work of his job, by requesting and taking from the second accused, Ashraf Najeh, owner and director of a company for services and supply. 279 thousand pounds as a bribe in exchange for assigning labor supply operations at the headquarters of the National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority to his company and paying the financial dues arising therefrom.
The investigations added that the accused, in his aforementioned capacity, requested and took gifts for himself in exchange for performing one of his job duties, by requesting and taking from the third defendant, Hassan Al-Basiouni, 80,000 pounds as a bribe, in return for assigning the transfers of participants in the conferences of the National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority to his company and paying the financial dues arising therefrom.
