The perpetrator of the attack was shot dead by the police. Monday morning, the mayor of Liège, Willy Demeyer, paid tribute to the victims at the scene where the police officers lost their lives.

Lucile “Cathy” Garcia and Soraya Belkacemi were killed while walking on rue des Augustins in Liège. The shooter then attacked a car on Boulevard d’Avroy, targeting the passenger. Cyril Vangriecken, a 22-year-old student teacher, also died.

The author, Benjamin Herman, a 31-year-old from Liège, was finally shot by the police following entering the nearby Léonie de Waha athenaeum.

Benjamin Herman had committed these three murders and at least nine attempted murders while he was on prison leave. He had become radicalized. His name had appeared in police and Sûreté reports.

The Liège justice had carried out a meticulous investigation to try to identify other possible perpetrators or accomplices. It emerged that no other person had intervened in the commission of the facts. In March 2021, the Liège council chamber noted the extinction of public action around this terrorist attack, due to the death of the author.

The federal police also paid tribute on Monday to the three victims of the attack.
