Liège-Guillemins station evacuated due to fire, train traffic suspended

Rail traffic was interrupted in Liège for around thirty minutes on Monday morning due to a fire that broke out at Liège-Guillemins station. The trains were running once more shortly before 8:00 a.m., but we must expect repercussions on the network to and from Liège, warned Infrabel, the infrastructure manager. Liège-Guillemins station had been evacuated around 7:30 am Monday morning due to a fire while traffic had been suspended.

“At 7:36 a.m., the firefighters arrived on site and were able to quickly control the fire,” said an Infrabel spokesperson, who mentioned a problem with a transformer as the origin of the fire.

Users can once once more access Liège station. “Consequences are however to be expected on the network, it takes time for the traffic to subside,” said the spokesperson.

According to the Liège police, the fire, which would be accidental, was brought under control around 07:45. There were no casualties.

“Anxiogenic start to the week”

Several Internet users present commented on the situation on Twitter. “Special situation in Liege-guillemins”, writes one of them. “General power outage and messages asking to evacuate the station for technical reasons. It goes without saying that no one was evacuating. The platforms were full as usual and people were taking their trains”.

“Firefighter and police sirens everywhere. Anxiogenic start to the week? No, maybe …”, ironically this other Internet user.
