Liège Flood Victim Accommodation: Long-term Hosting and Legal Proceedings

In Liège, an owner has been hosting a person who was a victim of the floods of July 2021 for two years. This accommodation was initially planned for a period of six months.

In July 2021, following an announcement he left on the “Flood Solidarity” platform, Pierre Frese was contacted by a student whose accommodation located in Angleur was damaged. He then offers to accommodate him in his house located on the heights of Liège. “ With the crisis unit, we concluded a precarious employment contract for a period of six months, from November 2021 to April 2022. But as he is a student who has very little income, he does not have any other accommodation and he finally stayed with me and I can’t get my house back” explains the owner.

For several months, Pierre Frese has no longer lived in his house. This needs to be the subject of work. ” What you need is there. There is electricity, gas, solar panels but it is not furnished. It needs to be refreshed and decorated. She’s not very pleasant to live with at the moment.“explains the owner who, for the moment, leaves his house at the entire disposal of this student whom he is hosting. In addition, the contract also provided for the payment of a monthly compensation” Initially it was 200 euros but with the energy crisis this sum paid the charges and for four months he has not paid me anything at all. The cell crisis no longer exists so I no longer know how to contact anyone. I feel a little abandoned “.

Hoping for an amicable outcome, Pierre Frese recently appealed to the Justice of the Peace to initiate conciliation proceedings. “ The conciliation procedure is not binding therefore, if the occupant of the premises does not appear at the hearing which is fixed by the judge, the owner does not know how to obtain a judgment from the Justice of the Peace which would oblige this person to leave the premises” explains Laure Papart, lawyer. Another request, for eviction this time, would undoubtedly allow this owner, and for a few costs, to recover his property.
