“Liège City’s New Parking Policy: Simplifying and Pacifying the Space”

2023-04-24 06:58:25

The City of Liège has decided to change its entire parking policy, it announced this weekend. The number of local areas will be reduced to 17 and the rates for paid parking reviewed. The fees for people parked fraudulently in places for local residents will increase from 40 to 80 euros!

Parking in the city is not easy: spaces reserved for local residents stand alongside paid parking spaces, shop&drive spaces and free spaces. With the arrival of the tram, the authorities have chosen to standardize this shambles and thus “pacify” the space.

It was this Saturday that this new parking plan was presented to the various municipal councilors by the mayor as well as by the alderman in charge Gilles Foret, during a “Mobility” commission supposed to simplify things somewhat.

First revolution to underline: the number of bordering zones which will pass from regarding sixty to 17 in order to better stick to the reality on the ground. These areas will therefore encompass a larger territory, with more streets. The next municipal council should vote for the creation of nearly 180 new local sites, this time mainly in the districts of Jupille, Bressoux and Laveu. Some of these locations already exist on the basis of a temporary decision by the municipal college. They will therefore be permanent.

Another change: the price of the fee for motorists who have the bad idea of parking in places reserved for residents without having the card. It will double and go from 40 to 80 euros, a way, explains the City, to better enforce parking on these sites.

As regards the number of paid parking spaces, these will not decrease, at least initially, the authorities have promised, at least not before the major developments have come out of the ground (tram, p+R, etc): there are currently 4,800 places in Liège, and 1,200 subscriptions. However, these will be reorganized according to the tram.

Once this new parking plan comes into effect, at the end of 2023 beginning of 2024, healthcare providers will be able to benefit from the subscription offer at a significantly reduced price: 100 euros per year instead of the current 600. A preferential rate will also be offered to residents of Liège using their car to get around and park at the other end of the city: 400 euros instead of 600.

Finally, the first 15 minutes of parking will now be free and the hourly rate will remain the same (1.50 euros). The use of Bancontact will also be generalized.
