Liège-Bastogne-Liège: Marc Hirschi as an outsider, Pogacar package

The spring classics season will end on Sunday with Liège-Bastogne-Liège, two days before the start of the Tour de Romandie. Three Swiss will be at the start, including Marc Hirschi. The Bernese is one of the outsiders.

Before this 108th edition of the “Doyenne”, what can Hirschi expect? The big favorites are Belgians Wout van Aert and Remco Evenepoel, French world champion Julian Alaphilippe and Spanish veteran Alejandro Valverde. Marc Hirschi (23 years old) evokes for his part a role of free spirit. “I’m happy because the team gives me this freedom. Tadej is number 1, but it’s always better to be able to play several cards. I am not forbidden to seize my opportunities“, he explains.

The same will be true for the Tour de Romandie next week, as well as the Tour de Suisse (June 12 to 19). These two races, like the Tour of Lombardy in autumn, are the Bernese’s main objectives this season. However, he will not compete in a grand tour over 3 weeks in 2022.

Pogacar package

Outgoing winner, Tadej Pogacar withdrew for Liège-Bastogne-Liège. The Slovenian returned to the country to support his partner Urska Zygart who was grieving for her mother. Tadej Pogacar took 12th place in the Flèche wallonne on Wednesday, his recovery race since he had not run since the Tour of Flanders (4th) at the beginning of the month. After this withdrawal from its leader, the UAE team will fully rely on the Bernese Marc Hisrchi.
