Liège: a teacher prosecuted for touching 21 children

A 44-year-old Verviétois appeared before the Liège criminal court on Friday to answer for several sexual assaults committed on 21 children. The defendant worked as a mathematics teacher in a school in the Liège region. Currently suspended, he faces a 30-month prison sentence.

The defendant is being prosecuted for indecent assaults and abuse of authority perpetrated between 2011 and 2020. Twenty-one children, including 19 girls, from a school in the Liège region where the defendant taught mathematics denounced touching regular, committed at different times. A colleague of this teacher had already questioned the management regarding his behavior in 2004. The first students complained in 2012.

The management of the establishment had recalled that tactile contacts were prohibited but several years passed before the suspension of the teacher. According to an expert, the defendant has no feeling of guilt and no questioning. The prosecution requested a 30-month prison sentence once morest him, accompanied by a suspended probation, as well as a ban on the attendance of minors. The defense pleaded acquittal while his client disputes the sexual nature of the gestures. Judgment will be delivered on December 23.
