The German manufacturer of construction equipment Liebherr will set up in two years a new factory creating “more than 300 jobs” in Nambsheim (Haut-Rhin), on an industrial zone intended to convert the territory of the former nuclear power plant of Fessenheim, he announced on Wednesday.
The group “officialized Wednesday (…) the investment plans of Liebherr France for 2025: 170 million euros within the framework of a new establishment in Alsace”, exposed the company in a press release, specifying that this project “will create more than 300 jobs”.
The new unit will produce components for earth-moving machines for public works: “mechanically welded parts, such as chassis elements”, as well as “pre-assembly and assembly of cabins”, according to the press release.
This future factory is part “as part of the development of all of the group’s activities”, underlines Liebherr, which employs 51,000 people worldwide for a turnover of 12.5 billion euros in 2022.
The new site is also part of a 350 million euro investment program in France by 2030, which should also benefit the French headquarters and main site in Colmar (tracked excavators), its neighbor in Niederhergheim as well as those of Campsas (Lot-et-Garonne, aeronautics) and Fontenay-Trésigny (Seine-et-Marne), according to a document from the group of which AFP was aware.
The plant will open a few kilometers from Fessenheim, in the “EcoRhena” activity zone created to ensure the economic reconversion of the territory housing the nuclear power plant which was definitively shut down on June 30, 2020.
For Liebherr France, this location on a 47-hectare site has the advantage of being “close” to Colmar, “not far from the Swiss and German border” and “in the immediate vicinity of a multimodal platform”, on the edge of the Rhine.
“This is very good news which launches the reconversion of the territory”, reacted to AFP Brigitte Klinkert, deputy (Renaissance) of the constituency concerned, who confirmed the objective of “more than 300 jobs” of this project.
Before its decline, the plant locally generated around 2,000 direct and indirect jobs. A “territorial project” initiated by the State in 2019 aims to compensate for its disappearance by the arrival of new activities.
“This announcement materializes the enormous, often invisible and complex work of the elected officials of this territory with the support of other public actors and in particular the State to allow the reception of new industrial projects that create value and jobs”, commented Josiane Chevalier, prefect of the Grand-Est region, and Louis Laugier, prefect of Haut-Rhin.
