Lidl Supermarket Strike: CNE Union Denounces Working Conditions and Precarious Contracts

The CNE union announces a strike at Lidl supermarkets on Friday. He denounces increasingly difficult working conditions and the generalization of precarious contracts within the chain. The action is being carried out as a common union front, according to the CNE. Management specifies for its part that only a few local actions are planned in Wallonia but that most stores should open.

The CNE was in fact unable to specify on Thursday evening whether all the 311 supermarkets that the German group has in Belgium would remain closed all day. “Managers will certainly open stores but with very small staff and limited hours,” predicts Annie Izzo. This lists several difficulties which prompted staff to strike on Friday: an increasingly heavy workload, an excessively high proportion of students, an increase in sick people and non-compliance with a collective work agreement.

“Management is completely disrespectful towards the workers, refusing, among other things, to grant a purchasing power bonus under the pretext that the company is not profitable,” she adds. Lidl Belgium employs some 10,000 people in its supermarkets and its five centers, most of which are on “precarious contracts”, deplores Ms. Izzo. “We cannot live decently with this type of contract,” she concludes.

Contacted Thursday evening, management was hopeful that most stores would open their doors on Friday. “We must not arouse customer concern. Some actions are expected tomorrow in Wallonia, from a union organization, but all stores will be easily accessible,” commented a spokesperson.
