Lidl Introduces Anti-Theft System on Meat and Fish to Combat Shoplifting – Latest Update on Retail Security Measures

With the explosion of shoplifting, the German retailer Lidl has introduced an anti-theft system on meat and fish, for example. The security system, unique in the food sector in Switzerland, divides customers but appeals to the company.

The yellow labels, visible to customers, are anti-theft devices. Although several people interviewed by RTS were unaware of the existence of this security system, it is nevertheless available on trays of meat or fish sold for less than ten francs.

These anti-theft devices have been used for several months by the German giant Lidl to deter thieves. “The investment was worth it,” says the spokesperson for Lidl Suisse SA. “We are now testing security devices”, notably “more discreet”, specifies Mathias Kaufmann at 7:30 p.m.

Increase in shoplifting

The distribution company’s measure was taken as the increase in shoplifting across Switzerland rose to 20% in 2022. This trend would have continued in 2023, according to members of Genève Commerces .

This creates “additional charges” from which online commerce does not suffer, deplores the general secretary of the professional association on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. The extent of the phenomenon is especially noted during inventories, specifies Flore Teysseire.

Contacted by RTS, the other major distributors do not wish to reveal their security measures. However, the use of anti-theft devices like at Lidl is not currently envisaged.
