A young grandmother at the end of her life claims that a security guard at the retailer recently barred her from the store. He had taken her “for a drug addict”.

Karen Sahiti, a 55-year-old Briton, will probably not return to shop at the German discounter. When she came to buy beers for her son and use the toilets at a store in Milton Keynes, England, her shopping spree turned into discrimination, according to the british media.

The very seriously ill grandmother said the security guard had allowed her to use the store’s facilities on the condition that she ‘come back to see him directly followingwards’. Perplexed, Karen returned as agreed, but the security guard changed her tune and told her that she was no longer allowed to shop.

“He told me I mightn’t come into the store because I looked ‘suspicious’. I was horrified and asked him why he was saying that,” says Karen Sahiti. “Look in what state you are,” he simply retorted. “I was so upset that I asked to see the director,” continues the grandmother.

Very skinny

The store manager told Karen that she might shop in the store, but be watched at all times. Shocked, she immediately left the store. But she was so distraught over the ordeal that she sat in her car crying for 20 minutes, before she might drive home and tell her daughter everything.

The latter complained to the store, accusing the security guard and the manager of discrimination and had the end of the story. In view of the physical appearance of Karen, very emaciated by the disease, the employees of the discounter thought that they had to do with a heroin addict who risked stealing food.

“How dare they”

“I’m 55 and dying. I may look sick and skinny, but I’m definitely not a drug addict. How dare they? I don’t have much time left, probably a few months, and I certainly don’t need such a thing to happen,” the 50-year-old said.

The family contacted Lidl headquarters regarding the incident and demanded an apology. A spokesperson for the supermarket chain confirmed that it was investigating the matter “as a matter of priority” and that a statement would be issued “as soon as possible”.
